Castle Head - Cumbria

CH

Castle Head lies between the fells of the Lake District to the north and the shores of Morecambe Bay to the south, in a secluded corner of North West England. The Centre includes an impressive Georgian house built by John Wilkinson, the Ironmaster, nestled in 20 hectares of grounds and gardens. Deer, badgers, foxes, rabbits and squirrels along with a wide range of bird life are frequent visitors and residents of the woodland, pond and river habitats encompassed within the grounds. All of which provide interest and inspiration to the Centres’ visitors.

The Centre is 10 miles (16km) from the M6 (junction 36) and 1 mile from Grange-over-Sands railway Station.

The Activities

As part of its Eco Challenge programme the Centre offers a range of activities which provide a challenging adventure within the beautiful setting of the south Lake District.  Students may investigate a mountain stream and the creatures living within it and then submerge themselves in the river undertaking a challenging ghyll scramble up it.  Alternatively they may undertake a challenging journey through the historic Coniston Coppermines Valley and explore the many ways in which the area has been exploited and used by humans and what the impacts are.

Evening walks offer the possibility of seeing owls, bats, badgers and other creatures which venture out at night.  After exploring and appreciating these special habitats students are given the opportunity to try some practical conservation tasks such as habitat creation and enhancement, woodland coppicing and tree planting or footpath and fence building.

The activities are designed to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the world around them and also to foster personal and social skills through teamwork and personal challenges. It also provides opportunities to see practical conservation in action and raise awareness of environmental and sustainable issues.
