Blencathra - Lake District

blencathra

Operated in partnership with the Lake District National Park Authority, the Centre occupies a dramatic setting on the south west side of Blencathra Mountain near Keswick. Gardens and grounds with living willow structures and ponds provide interest and inspiration for visitors on a variety of courses. Red squirrels frequent the grounds and can be seen from the comfort of the dining room. The site offers a magnificent panorama of the Lake District with its rich tapestry of England's highest mountains, quiet pastures, wooded valleys, streams, lakes and settlements which provide a focus for the Centre's activities.

The Centre is 15 miles (24km) from the M6 (junction 40) and 16 miles (25km) from Penrith Station.

The Activities

As part of its Eco Challenge programme the Centre offers a range of activities which provide a challenging adventure through the various landscapes and habitats of the Lake District National Park.  Students may investigate the wildlife of upland streams and woodlands and undertake a challenging journey through the breath taking mountains whilst exploring how humans have used this landscape through mining and quarrying, farming and recreation.

Centre staff may lead students on a night or dusk walk with the possibility of seeing bats, owls, badgers and other creatures which venture out at night.  After exploring and appreciating these students are given the opportunity to try some practical conservation tasks in nearby woodland such as coppicing, invasive species removal and footpath maintenance to help understand the need for habitat management and protection.

The activities are designed to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the world around them but also to foster personal and social skills through teamwork and personal challenges. It also provides opportunities to see practical conservation in action in the awe inspiring landscape of the Lake District National Park.
