Orielton - Pembrokeshire
Orielton is an elegant Georgian mansion set in 48 hectares of wooded grounds on the Castlemartin Peninsular. It is immediately adjacent to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, with its beautiful beaches, sand dunes and historic castles. The Preseli Hills are within easy reach, providing breathtaking views of the whole county, and the National Nature Reserves of Skomer and Stackpole are close by. All visitors can enjoy the rich variety of wildlife within the Centre grounds including badgers and several species of bat.
The Activities
As part of its Eco Challenge programme the Centre offers a range of activities which provide a challenging adventure in the setting of the stunning Pembrokeshire coast Students undertake a challenging journey along the coastline through the awe inspiring scenery and may explore the sandy beaches and rock pools through a rocky shore study. Alternatively they can explore the coastline to investigate the importance of the habitats and species which live there and how humans have affected the coast and also how they try to protect it.
Night walks around the Centre grounds and woods provide the chance to see lesser horseshoe bats and other creatures which venture out at night. After exploring and appreciating these special habitats students are given the opportunity to try some practical conservation tasks such as habitat creation and wildlife enhancement, invasive species removal and footpath building.
The activities are designed to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the world around them and also to foster personal and social skills through teamwork and personal challenges. It also provides opportunities to see practical conservation in action and raise awareness of environmental and sustainable issues.
