What is involved in Eco Challenge?

Eco Challenge is a three year project offering around 7500 pupils from 250 schools in 22 urban areas of England the opportunity to experience and enjoy the natural environment. It is funded through the Big Lottery Fund Changing Spaces programme and environmental education charity the Field Studies Council (FSC) is leading on the project.

Eco Challenge consists of three elements

  • A three night Eco Challenge residential experience at an FSC Centre
  • Three post course sessions in the schools grounds or local community in the term following the residential
  • Evaluation of the impact of Eco Challenge

Experiences and skills gained during the residential course will play an important part in the post course element of Eco Challenge. A range of activities during the residential course and post course sessions will enable students to achieve the following outcomes

Eco Challenge Outcomes

  • Improved personal and social development skills including increased self confidence, awareness of self and others, team skills and improved communication skills
  • Increased awareness, knowledge and understanding of the natural environment
  • Increased pride in local green spaces
  • Increased awareness, knowledge and understanding of environmental and sustainable issues
